FAQS FOR FIRST-TIMERS

Planning your first underwater cenote photoshoot? This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to understand how lighting, safety, and timing come together to create breathtaking images beneath the surface.

A guide created for anyone curious to experience something extraordinary — no modeling or diving experience required. We’ll take you inside the cenotes of Tulum and Playa del Carmen to show how magazine-style underwater portraits come to life.

— o —

If you’re thinking about trying something truly different—something that’s not just an experience to live but that also leaves you with jaw-dropping images, editorial-quality shots that could easily land on a magazine cover, the kind you’ll share with pride (and maybe spark a touch of envy from your friends 😏)—then you’re in the right place.

Here you’ll find information, answers, and little nuggets collected by someone who, since 2013, has turned a passion into a profession. This is our personal take on underwater photography in the cenotes: a way to answer the most common questions and an invitation to try an experience that, until not long ago, felt simply impossible.

Enjoy the read.

Curiosity about underwater photography

There’s no doubt: most people who approach underwater photography know very little about it. For decades “underwater photography” meant tropical fish playing hide-and-seek among corals and anemones. Beautiful, yes—but that’s not what this is about.

Here, the protagonists are human beings—everyday people who become underwater models, creating spectacular shots that would’ve seemed unthinkable until yesterday. Images that now fill social feeds with pride, stirring curiosity and the same recurring question: Can I do this too?

Can I do it too, even if I have no experience?

Yes! Our sessions are designed for everyday people, with no posing or diving experience required. We guide you step by step, and the result is spectacular images—even on your very first time.

What is underwater photography in cenotes (for everyday people)?

In our case, at Sebi Messina Photography, the subjects are people just like you: singles, couples, newlyweds. No posing experience—much less underwater. And surprise: many don’t even know how to swim (yes, you read that right—we’ll explain how it works later on).

The result is surreal imagery: bodies that seem to float thanks to the absence of gravity, colorful fabrics drifting like drapes from Flemish paintings, and props adding a magical touch. And it works for everyone: we’ve photographed six-month-old babies and women over 60, ultra-slender figures and plus sizes.

Where can you do an underwater session? Why are cenotes the best place in the world for underwater photography?

At its heart, cenotes offer what no pool or ocean can — crystal clarity, gentle stillness, and a natural stage where light and silence create underwater magic.

The best places in the world for underwater portraits (Underwater Modeling, Trash The Dress, Maternity…) are in Mexico, in the Riviera Maya—the area south of Cancún, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum—where the most beautiful and most photography-friendly cenotes are concentrated. (If you want to know what cenotes are, click 👉 here ).

But why cenotes specifically? To understand that, compare them to the other two options: pools and the sea.

  • Pools: super convenient (flat bottom, no current), but that uniform floor is monotonous and insignificant as a background. And there’s chlorine—great for hygiene, but a real enemy when you need to keep your eyes open.
  • Sea: fascinating, full of life and color. But currents can range from annoying to prohibitive; salt burns your eyes just like chlorine; and there’s no place to brace yourself to submerge safely.
  • Cenotes: fresh, ultra-clear water that doesn’t sting your eyes; practically imperceptible current; natural backdrops rich in light and detail; and countless spots to hold on to (wooden stairs, rocks, mangrove roots).

Not snorkeling, not diving: a third way

  • Snorkeling is usually done in the sea. At best, it gives you fun, amateur photos taken with a phone in a waterproof case or a tiny action cam. Cute memories—low stakes.
  • Diving photography is something else: gorgeous, yes, but demanding. It requires tanks, certifications (PADI, CMAS, NASE), and pro gear. Subjects? Stunning marine flora and fauna, or sometimes other divers.
  • Our sessions in cenotes are completely different. You—an everyday person—are the subject. You don’t need to submerge more than a few inches (even if the photo looks much deeper). And despite the shallow depth, we still use expensive, highly professional equipment, with powerful strobes and housings rated to 60 meters. We are among the very few—if not the only ones—shooting this kind of imagery while operating with full scuba equipment.

One key detail: Sebi is a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, with many logged dives in the Maldives, the Red Sea, Cuba, Antigua and of course Mexico and Italy.

Experience, art, safety

Experience

We began photographing couples and individuals underwater in 2013. The obvious line would be: “we have over ten years of experience.” True—but reductive. Even though we’re still proud of what we created back then, our style, technique, and vision have evolved in a constant journey of growth. Today the images are infinitely more refined than at the beginning, and every new session manages to be better than the last.

Art

People often ask about our artistic references. Think Caravaggio’s off-center, dramatic light; Tiepolo’s generous figures; and a hint of Dalí’s surrealism. In short, our underwater photography draws—consciously or not—on Baroque and Surrealism.

Beyond the painterly inspiration, the goal is clear: editorial-quality underwater photography, images that have nothing to envy from the covers of major international magazines—shots that merge technique, aesthetics, and storytelling in a single frame.

Safety

Safety is an absolute priority. That’s why Sebi wears full scuba gear — cumbersome and heavy on land, but in the water, it provides perfect control and support during every shot.

  • already be underwater, ready to shoot the moment the model dips in;
  • assist her in any situation, even at just a few inches of depth.

Is it safe to pose in a cenote?

Completely. Each session is run with full professional safety measures — Sebi shoots from below in scuba gear, while another team member assists from nearby, making sure you always feel safe and supported.

What does it mean to pose underwater?

In essence, posing underwater means embracing weightlessness — a graceful dance between stillness and movement that no dry setting can reproduce.

In short: enjoying the absence of gravity. Water cancels weight and turns bodies into suspended figures—on land some poses are impossible; underwater, it feels like flying.

Dresses (bridal or not) open gracefully, colorful fabrics float like painted drapes—just like in Flemish canvases. This is what makes underwater photography different and unique: what you get isn’t just a photo—it’s a living painting.

How do you breathe underwater during the session?

At its core, underwater breathing is replaced by calm control — short, mindful dives where each held breath turns into a moment of pure stillness before surfacing again.

A sweet and very frequent question: But how do I breathe?

The answer is simple: you don’t. Each dip lasts about 10–15 seconds, an easy window for anyone to hold their breath. Each descent is short, intense, and safe.

⬇️ dip → ⏱ 10–15s → 📸 click → 🫧 resurface

Do I need experience?

No. Your first time can already be a masterpiece.

I’ve never posed underwater. Can I still do it?

Yes—absolutely. In over ten years of work, none of our hundreds of clients had done underwater modeling before meeting us.

We’ve occasionally had professional or semi-professional models, but even they had never posed underwater. Everyone discovered a new, unforgettable world.

Each underwater cenote photoshoot includes full safety support and professional guidance — from breathing techniques and posing tips to ensuring you feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire experience.

How do you prepare for an underwater photoshoot in a cenote?

No special prep needed. Just show up well-rested and sober (best to go easy on alcohol the night before).

Before the shoot we do a short briefing where we explain everything:

  • body positioning (especially legs and feet);
  • how to relax your facial expression;
  • little tricks for moving in the water;
  • how to hold your breath calmly.

Then we get in the water, using a partially submerged ladder as the first point of support. From there, we start putting the briefing into practice. And everyone has their own pace:

  • there are the “born mermaids” (a few!) ready in three minutes;
  • and the normal folks (most people) who need a few minutes more.

And that’s perfectly fine: everyone gets all the time they need—no rush, no pressure.

Safety and preparation: I can’t swim, can I still pose?

Yes — even if you can’t swim, you can still enjoy the experience safely. Most of our models didn’t know how to swim either.

In reality, about 70% of our models didn’t know how to swim. For many years we’ve developed a series of measures to help them pose in complete safety:

  • we never leave anyone alone mid-water;
  • for each pose, we present a “good friend,” i.e., a secure support (rock, ladder, mangrove roots) to use;
  • while moving around, the model is always accompanied by a team member, sometimes with the help of small float boards.

Paradoxically, non-swimmers are often the ones who enjoy the experience the most: stepping out of your comfort zone gives you a huge sense of self-esteem! At the end of a session, one client told us: It was a rebirth! Maybe an exaggeration — but hearing it filled us with pride.

You may think that this is simply a photography session, but it was so much more for me. My experience with Sebi was amazing, inspiring, and uplifting, incorporating some empowerment and a little bit of healing.

Sebi is a kind soul with a passion to make his subjects feel beautiful through his work. I highly recommend him.

Is there someone to help me in the water?

Always two people:

  • Sebi, with the camera, strobes, and full scuba gear;
  • an assistant handling lights, props, and supporting you. A third person remains on land for logistics.

What should I bring? (outfits, makeup, lenses…)

It depends on what you want to wear. In general:

  • Outfits: choose comfortable, voluminous pieces that open underwater to create that ethereal effect we love. We also have “convertible” dresses (adjustable size) and skirts in various colors. On top, a one-piece swimsuit or bikini top—solid color, no patterns.
  • Makeup: not mandatory, but a bold lipstick (variations of red) helps. Avoid foundation (it can create a wax-mask effect). False lashes: cute, but they don’t last.
  • Contact lenses: not recommended. They can come off and won’t help you see better underwater.

What should I wear to an underwater session?

Something comfortable, colorful, and flowing—ideal to enhance weightlessness.

A few technical details

Underwater photography isn’t just a genre—it’s almost a science in itself. There are so many variables that make it far more demanding than shooting on land. That’s also why underwater photographers are few—very few.

We don’t want to bore you with tech talk. This guide is for the person in front of the camera, not for fellow photographers. But here’s one important fact: underwater, light changes. It filters; colors fade.

Here’s how light fades underwater:

Depth Color Effect
1–3 m Red 🔴 Drops off immediately, turns dark/brownish
5–7 m Orange 🟠 Loses pop, shifts to dull tones
10–15 m Yellow 🟡 Tends toward greenish
20–25 m Green 🟢 Weakens
30–35 m Blue 🔵 Starts to fade, though it remains dominant
40–50 m Violet 🟣 Almost disappears; the world turns blue/gray

Now, don’t worry: in cenotes we shoot at just a few inches of depth. But even there colors shift, and even skin tones change.

How do we bring colors back to life?

With strobes (or continuous lights, though those are less powerful). They’re the real magic: they restore red, orange, yellow… even at 100 meters. That’s why some underwater photos look flat and bluish, while others (ours 😉) have vivid colors, strong contrast, and a surreal aura.

But it’s not just about strobes. As we said, cenotes aren’t flat like pools. They’re a set of rocks, caverns, and openings where sunlight pours in and often creates that stunning effect we call a “cathedral.” A natural stage that makes every shot unique.

Editing

If we talk about editing time, the best comparison is an iceberg. The visible part is the time we spend together in the water. The hidden part is the logistics before every shoot and—above all—the hours of work at the computer.

Do you know how long editing takes on average per delivered photo?

At Sebi Messina Photography, each underwater image receives at least one hour of individual editing. Even with strobes, raw photos retain a subtle green-blue tone that needs careful correction. Through precise color work, balanced contrast, and selective sharpening, we bring every frame to life with our signature editorial look.

Nothing is automated — every image is refined by hand, one by one, until it feels alive.

What’s the difference between the various underwater sessions?

Names change—the essence doesn’t: these are all underwater photoshoots in cenotes, with individuals or couples playing with light and water. The difference lies in the purpose.

  • Artistic sessions, almost always individual, with an option for artistic nude posing.
  • Ideal to celebrate birthdays, sweet 16, or simply life (like someone marking a certain number of cancer-free years).

  • Also unconventional pairs, like mother and daughter.

Birthday Underwater Photoshoots in Mexico — FAQ

Celebrating your birthday underwater is one of the most magical experiences we create — a moment of beauty, reflection, and joy surrounded by light and water. Here are some of the most common questions from our “birthday queens” before their cenote sessions.

Beautiful woman floating gracefully underwater in a Mexican cenote near Playa del Carmen, celebrating her 40th birthday as sunlight beams create a cathedral-like effect behind her.

Absolutely! Many of our guests celebrate their birthdays with an underwater photoshoot in the cenotes. It’s a unique and empowering way to honor yourself: calm waters, flowing fabrics, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that captures your beauty in a timeless, editorial way. Whether you’re staying in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or anywhere in the Riviera Maya, we’ll plan every detail for your birthday underwater session.

I can’t swim — can I still do a birthday underwater photoshoot?

Yes! Most of our birthday sessions are created for guests with little or no swimming experience. You’ll always have full safety support between shots, and we’ll guide you through each movement step by step. Even without swimming skills, you’ll look serene, confident, and completely weightless in your photos.

Can my friends come with me to the photoshoot?

Of course! Your friends or loved ones are always welcome to join you at the cenote and share the experience from the shore. Many of our “birthday queens” bring their best friends along — to cheer, help behind the scenes, and enjoy the day together. It makes the celebration even more special.

Do you provide dresses or birthday-style props?

Yes! We offer a curated selection of colored drapes, as well as birthday-style touches such as numbers or a symbolic cake prop. Every session is personalized to your vision — elegant, ethereal, bold, or vibrant — so your underwater birthday photos feel uniquely yours.

FAQ

Is it really worth coming to Mexico for an underwater session?

The answer: absolutely yes. For two key reasons:

  1. The Cenotes

    They are perfect for underwater photography and exist only here, in the Yucatán Peninsula, south of Cancún, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. They’re not simple natural pools: they’re geological wonders of rock and light.
    They have vaults, caves and semi-caves, sunbeams filtering from above to create spectacular effects. And one unique advantage: in the cavern areas, the near absence of vegetation keeps the water crystal-clear.

  2. The Price

    Our packages are often more accessible than you might imagine. The most affordable ones cost as much—and perhaps even less—than an average, standard photoshoot in the United States. What makes the difference is not just the setting, but the complexity behind every image: professional underwater equipment worth thousands of dollars, careful logistics, and editing times that are infinitely longer than those of a traditional session.

    The result is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—and images that stand apart for their originality, creativity, and the sense of wonder they carry.

I’m plus-size—can I still look good underwater?

Our approach is also plus-size friendly underwater photography, which means we adapt poses, lighting, and movement techniques to highlight the unique beauty of every body type.

How long does a session last?

We offer different packages with varying durations and options.

What should I wear?

Something comfortable and voluminous: a loose dress or wide skirt with a one-piece swimsuit or a solid-color bikini top. We also provide convertible dresses and skirts in various colors.

Is it safe for pregnant women?

Yes, as long as the pregnancy isn’t high-risk. Weightlessness adds extra comfort. It’s always a good idea to consult your OB-GYN. We require a signed waiver.

Can I gift this?

Absolutely. It’s a unique, original gift—perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or simply to surprise a friend.

How much does it cost?

We offer several packages. Please fill out the Get a Quote form—we reply quickly. If you don’t see our email within a few hours, check your Spam or Promotions folder.

Where should I stay for my underwater photoshoot with Sebi Messina Photography?

Anywhere between Playa del Carmen and Tulum works perfectly — our cenote lies right in the middle of the Riviera Maya, with Cancún only slightly farther north.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, consider Puerto Aventuras, just a few minutes from “our” cenote, home to the Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya. Even the Barceló Maya Grand Resort sits right across the street from the cenote.

Whichever base you choose, we’ll provide clear directions and timing so that your underwater experience starts seamlessly — relaxed, prepared, and ready to dive into something unforgettable.
