One of the most exciting things about our work as underwater photographers in the cenotes is certainly the variety of characters, faces, customs, and cultures we have dealt with over the years.
For some time now, among our clients there are more and more Afro-American women who, alone or in company, come to Mexico, staying especially in the area of Tulum, which for some years now has had an exponential growth that has led it to become one of the favorite destinations in all of Mexico.
This has happened mainly because Tulum has been able to differentiate its tourist offer compared to, for example, Cancun or the various resorts of the Riviera Maya. There are no huge all-inclusive hotels here, where people tend to spend the entire time of their vacation. There are instead a lot of small hotels and AirbnBs popping up like mushrooms. And the target audience is usually medium-high.
In Tulum, you can choose to spend the day on a golden beach with a turquoise sea or to stay in the pool of your Airbnb (there are some really nice ones), maybe enjoying the cuisine of a chef hired ad hoc. Then in the evening, you go out. There is an infinite number of bars and clubs where you can meet people, among them many African Americans.
Some have even moved here to Tulum for a few months. After all, if the pandemic has forced (or allowed) us to work remotely, there is no reason why you can’t do it from Mexico, a stone’s throw from a Caribbean beach.
Others, however, organize short stays of 3 or 4 days. They come alone or in groups, often to celebrate their birthdays. Although short, this type of vacation is really a breath of fresh air, especially after the restrictions of recent times.
So it often happens to run into beautiful groups of stunning black women, who come to celebrate life and end up falling in love with such a fascinating place.
To the excursions to water parks or to the archaeological site (with that splendid temple overhanging the sea) they often add a visit to a cenote.
Allow me to digress for a moment. For those who come to Mexico for the first time, cenotes are an absolute surprise. Very few places in the world have something like this. And it’s hard to find something similar in terms of water transparency or magnificence. Throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, there are about 6000 of them, with every shape, size, and depth. They may resemble small lakes, but in reality, they are the product of a much more complex geological process, called karstification.
Let us try to explain it in a simple way. Karstification is the chemical action of water on limestone rocks (Yucatan is all made of limestone). Rainwater tends to penetrate the ground creating erosions in the rock. In its tendency to flow towards the sea, over the millennia, it has created a web of underground waterways and beautiful caves. But it has been the collapse of the roof of these caves, generated by other rains, that has created these splendid “little lakes” that are called cenotes.
In any case, more than lakes, we prefer to consider them as huge aquariums of fresh and crystalline water. They are also deeply connected with the uses and customs of the Mayan populations, who used them both as a source of drinking water and places for religious celebrations and sacrifices.
The use for tourist purposes is instead a very recent phenomenon that began no more than 25 years ago. At first, the cenotes were the prerogative of a few cave divers, who bravely began to map the various branches and connections between one cenote and another. Then, over time, less advanced divers began to arrive and, following expert guides, began to dive in these magical waters.
I think I dived for the first time in a cenote in 2005. It was love at first sight. At that time I was already a certified advanced diver and had dived many times in the Maldives, the Red Sea, and Cuba. But those few dives I did in cenotes were a life-changing experience.
Then, in 2013, I did my downshifting and moved to Mexico to do underwater photography in cenotes. At that moment I was able to combine my two old passions, diving, and photography.
But what were we talking about? We started this post by mentioning how exciting it was (and still is) to meet people from all over the world. Then I referred to the beautiful black women who also come to Tulum to celebrate their birthdays.
And it’s exactly the underwater photoshoots for birthdays in Tulum that I wanted to talk about, which is something we started doing not too long ago. In the beginning, it was a “normal” underwater modeling session that was held on the occasion of a birthday.
Slowly we are now trying to add some elements that can refer to the birthday, for example, some cakes and numbers…
Taylor is the volcanic model pictured in the photos of this post. Dealing with her has been a wonderful experience. She is a woman full of life that I would have shot with for days. Hard to believe, but she just turned 61.
By using her own words, in her Facebook profile “Taylor is a passionate erotic educator & sex goddess, cert in holistic aromatherapy & human behavior”.
