Birthday Underwater Photoshoot Tulum – Shay
I would like to avoid making the usual considerations about how the pandemic has changed our lives. But a few days ago, I was reflecting on how people are literally thirsty to celebrate life, almost like an exorcistic compensation for everything that happens around them.
I was thinking about this, noticing how the number of people celebrating their birthdays during quick getaways, which take place somewhere abroad, has dramatically increased. More than ever, these mini holidays are just like a break from the worries of these months and a reaffirmation of the joie de vivre.

The Riviera Maya and Tulum are the ideal places for many American women (and among them many African Americans) who, alone or in small groups, want to take a short vacation from the winter and the torment of the pandemic.
Among them was Shay, who came to spend a few days between Playa del Carmen and Tulum to celebrate her birthday. Just a couple of weeks ago, she saw our photos, nicely shared by another amazing lady on Facebook, and fell in love with the idea of doing something similar.
So, just a couple of days before she arrived, she booked a Birthday Underwater photoshoot in a cenote located halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
What to say about her? She is an incredible concentration of energy and sympathy. And working with her was so fun that our photoshoot ended up taking a lot longer than expected.
As you might imagine, none of our clients has ever had any modelling experience, least of all underwater. And despite their being highly motivated, they always have a minimum of uncertainty about how the photoshoot will take place and above all if they will be able to accomplish it.
For this reason, before we start taking pictures, it’s normal spending some time getting them used to stay underwater for a few seconds. Someone feels immediately at ease from the first dive; someone else needs five minutes or so. In the end, after this phase of adaptation, completed without any hassle, the real photoshoot begins.
As often happens, even in Shay’s case, the “hidden mermaid” came out.
And when this condition of grace occurs, both the photographer and the model forget the passage of time. The former would never stop shooting, and the second wonders how she managed to live up to that moment, without experiencing the underwater modelling.
These are some of the images that came out of an extraordinary birthday underwater photoshoot.
And this is what Shay wrote on Facebook, proudly showing “our” images.

“I went to Playa del Carmen to celebrate my birthday this past weekend. After a long year of 2020, I decided to do something adventurous (shocker, lol). Here are some pictures of my underwater photoshoot, located in one of the open water pools called “cenote”. (Cenote Cristalino) I had to do the shoot with no contacts.
You should have seen me. I was like, is that a rock? What’s in front of me. HaHa, I was laughing at myself because I couldn’t see a thang! I wish there was a video of me trying to remember to smile, keep my eyes open, breathe, pose all while moving the fabric in water. Chile….did I mentioned I was thinking wait I didn’t suck in my belly, lol.
Whew! I got a workout that day. And an added touch was the little fish nibbling at my feet. I can’t say enough great things about my photographer, Sebi, he was EXCELLENT. He guided me through my breathing and poses, all while he was in scuba gear capturing these amazing shots! I was so impressed on how these pictures turned out.
I wanted to share a few with you all. Let me know if you have any questions. Highly recommend him. I did some comparisons of his work against other photographers. And the qualities of his photos are hands down above the rest and worth every penny.”
