With great passion, we have been doing underwater photoshoots in Mexico since 2013.
Trash The Dress Underwater still continues to be the most frequent variation in our photo sessions, although Underwater Modeling has become a very successful product in the last two or three years. Slightly more occasional, but no less important, are the Underwater Maternity sessions.
At the end of the day, since it is still underwater photography, one would think that there is not much difference between these different types of underwater photoshoots.
In reality, it is not.
It doesn’t matter if they are newlyweds or honeymooners or couples celebrating an anniversary. Photographing a man and a woman interacting underwater is different than photographing a single woman modeling alone.
A single person does not interact with another human being, but “only” with the surroundings.
Things change, however, for Underwater Maternity sessions. Sometimes they are mother-to-be alone (at least during the photoshoot) other times accompanied by their husband. Technically they could be considered as something very similar to Underwater Modeling or Underwater Trash The Dress.
But there is a small detail, more emotional than technical, that makes them magically different from other variants of underwater photoshoots. The mother-to-be, although it may seem to be alone, in reality, it is not.
There is always a little fish swimming inside her. And having two beings in one in front of the camera is a very exciting feeling that neither Trash The Dress nor Underwater Modeling gives you.

In any case, for these emotions, we have to thank the technology that for some years now has made underwater photography really within everyone’s reach.
Although for professional photography it is necessary to use quite sophisticated instruments, even a “simple” cell phone or a small box like the Gopro (both real technical prodigies) can give us photos or films of a level more than sufficient for amateur use.
…
The cenotes, geological wonders peculiar to Mexico, represent without a doubt the best solution for our type of underwater photography. And they have so many advantages that make them truly unique.
They are certainly more attractive than swimming pools that, although more comfortable and with a constant depth, do not offer the light effects of cenotes, let alone the charm of the sea.
In addition, the water is fresh and chlorine-free, and this is another huge advantage that differentiates them from the sea and the pools. In cenotes, you can keep your eyes open without them burning. And keeping your eyes (well) open makes the photos even more appealing. Even if those who see them, unaware of the characteristics of the water in the cenotes, wonder how this is possible.
There is another great advantage. Photoshoots in cenotes can be taken in any weather condition. Something that would not be possible at sea, considering the wind, the currents, the sediments in suspension…

What advice would we give to those who want to try the Underwater Maternity experience in a cenote here in Mexico?
First of all, common sense.
The priority is the safety of the baby (and the mother), so it is better not to be in the middle of a risky pregnancy. For this reason, it would be good to inform your gynecologist that you want to participate in an Underwater Maternity session. Knowing you, he will be the one who will best advise you.
For our part, our sessions take place in a very relaxed situation, as those who have already been with us know.
In fact, before we start with the actual photo shoot, and after a briefing on land, we will enter the water together and give you all the time you need to feel comfortable. We will work together on your breathing, your body position, your facial expression, and your eyes (which must remain open). Only when you tell us you feel ready will we start taking the first photos.
Brittney, a gorgeous black woman who was also celebrating her birthday, chose a package that included pictures on land. And so we started with photos among the lush vegetation of the cenote.
This photoshoot was of great importance to her. She planned it down to the smallest detail, thinking carefully about what to wear and what colors to match.
As a good Afro-American, the style of some of the clothes she wore certainly recalled the popular costumes of some African country. Strong and garish colors full of contrast were certainly a great help in trying to create beautiful images.
For the underwater photos, she preferred instead to wear white clothes. The first was rather tight, to highlight the belly. The second with voluminous organza extensions that created a beautiful effect of lightness underwater.
The light conditions were perfect, as well as the transparency of the water.
We wish all the best to this beautiful family.

Review
“I think everyone should do an underwater photoshoot.. pregnant or not! Traveling while pregnant can be tiring but this experience was really therapeutic. The water was clear and beautiful and took all the pressure off my joints. And it didn’t hurt that the location was AMAZING! Sebi Messina Photography made this experience so easy for me and my husband! He dives down with scuba gear to get your photos so he is sure to get the shot and doesn’t have to worry about holding his breath like us. It took so much stress off and we came out with Perfection!!”
