Cenote Underwater Photography
Those who have never been to Mexico have probably never heard of cenotes. Although something similar can be found in Cuba, where they are called “Ojos de agua” (water eyes), these are quite different formations, more similar to small ponds without any continuity in underground rivers or caves.
Beyond any interesting geological description, connected with the karst nature of the soil in the Yucatan peninsula, or with asteroids that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, in most cases, the best definition of a cenote is “AQUARIUM”.
Cenotes can be considered as a network of enormous freshwater aquariums, with fishes, plants, caves, and even underground rivers that connect them.
Let’s say that they have always existed… and for the Mayans, throughout history, they have always represented a source of fresh water and, occasionally, also a sacred place to hold ancient religious ceremonies and even throwing the bodies of victims of human sacrifices.

An integral part of the culture and history of Mexico
For example, if you happen to visit the magnificent city of Chichen Itza, the guide will take you to see a large pool of rather muddy water: the Sacred Cenote. Undoubtedly it is not an aquarium, nor the best place for underwater photography, nor the most attractive cenote. Still, it is a place of enormous archaeological interest where artefacts of gold and jade have been found as well as pottery and even human remains. In short, cenotes are an integral part of the culture and history of this part of Mexico.
They have also become a tourist attraction, but only recently. Probably not more than 30 years ago. And within a few decades, divers from all over the world began to converge to a cave diving paradise called Riviera Maya.
About twenty years ago, I was one of them. At the time, I was still living in Europe, and Mexico was “just” a beautiful place where I had already been on vacation. One day I read about cenotes in some “Lonely Planet” guide. Being already a certified advanced diver, the idea of diving there immediately attracted me.
At the time, I did not imagine that I would even come to live here. However, thinking about it, I can say that the beauty of cenotes is for sure one of the reasons behind my relocation (and downshifting).
Job and passion
For several years now, underwater photography for which I decided to move to Mexico has become my job and my passion.
Paradoxically, I don’t have time for cave diving anymore. But cenotes have become my second office. And what an office …
And I love knowing so many couples (but also models), joining us from all over the world. Most of them had no idea what the Underwater Trash The Dress sessions were. But finding some of our photos on the Internet, perhaps by chance, was enough to set off the spark.
The beautiful Lee-Anne is one of our amazing brides. And this is the lovely review she dropped on WeddingWire.
“Outstanding!
We did an underwater shoot with Sebi on June 16th. We couldn’t be happier! We were both a bit nervous going into it, but Sebi & his assistant (and wife) were so wonderful, they made us feel so comfortable. We had a lot of fun! We ended up in the water for 3 hours and got some really excellent shots. Sebi sent us our photos about 2 weeks later, which was way earlier than we were expecting. They are phenomenal, so much better than we were expecting (we thought we’d look funny underwater).
We highly recommend doing a shoot with Sebi, it’s such an amazing experience and worth every penny. If we end up getting pregnant, we’re hoping to go back for a maternity shoot !! Please don’t hesitate to book this once in a lifetime experience with an extremely professional photographer! “
Thank you, guys!
