Maybe you were Googling “underwater photoshoots,” or maybe a friend sent you a link, or perhaps the universe just brought you here randomly (thanks, universe). Whatever the case may be, we’re excited to share with you the incredible world of cenote photography.
Now, let’s get real for a second. Have you ever seen underwater photos that look so stunningly real-unreal, you couldn’t help but wonder if they were photoshopped or just straight-up fake? Well, that’s exactly what goes through everyone’s minds when they approach a cenote photoshoot. The shock on their faces is priceless as they realize they had no idea something like this even existed. It’s like discovering a new species, but instead of a creature, it’s a whole new world beneath the surface.
As you gaze upon these breathtaking photos, you can’t help but ask yourself: how on earth did that model keep her eyes open underwater for so long? And how does she look so natural? And most importantly, how does she even breathe? These are all valid questions, and it all comes down to the exceptional medium in which these photos are taken: water. And not just any water, but underwater water (yes, that’s a thing).

Now, you might be thinking, “But wait, aren’t we mostly made of water?” And you’d be right. Our bodies are about 60% water, and we spent a good nine months floating in liquid before being born. But let’s face it, we’re not fish. We can’t just live underwater indefinitely without some sort of apparatus. That’s where swimming comes in. To stay afloat, we’ve gotta learn to swim. And sure, some people might look like mermaids in the water, but we’re definitely not made for aquatic life.
So you may be wondering, how on earth can someone stay underwater and model for a photoshoot when they’ve probably never even modeled on land before? Well, let’s dive into it, shall we?
First of all, let’s address the common questions that arise when people see our underwater photoshoots in cenotes. How do the models keep their eyes open underwater? And how long do they have to hold their breath for?
Well, the good news is that the cenote water is fresh and chlorine-free, which means that your eyes won’t sting like they do in the ocean or a chlorinated pool. It just takes a little getting used to, which anyone can do within a few minutes of practice before the photoshoot starts.
As for holding your breath, you don’t need the lungs of a freediver to model underwater. The photos are taken one at a time, with each descent lasting no more than 10 or 15 seconds. So, you don’t have to worry about staying underwater for too long.
With these explanations in mind, the idea of modeling underwater suddenly seems less impossible and bizarre than you might have initially thought.

It’s like they fulfill some deep-seated desire within us, a dream of flying perhaps. Even experienced divers and free divers feel this pull towards the magical allure of the underwater world.
And if we want to get all Freudian about it, being submerged underwater can unconsciously take us back to our prenatal days, floating in our mother’s womb. It’s no wonder that being underwater feels so darn good!
That’s why underwater photography has an added value that regular photography just can’t compete with. But here’s the thing, most people think that modeling underwater is only for the fearless few with superhuman abilities. Not true! It’s not like you need to have gills to pull it off. Anyone can do it, with a few minutes of practice and the right guidance.
We began our underwater photoshoot adventures in Cenotes back in 2013 when we moved from the old continent of Europe to Mexico. Our first idea was to do some “Underwater Trash The Dress” photography, which was just an extension of wedding photography. And guess what? It was an instant success, like hitting a bullseye with a harpoon! Our underwater photography skills skyrocketed from there, and years later, we’re still in touch with many of the couples who posed for us. And to top it off, they’ve even started families of their own, creating a whole new generation of underwater enthusiasts!

Back in the day, our underwater modeling photoshoots were not as common as the Underwater Trash The Dress sessions. Only a handful of brave souls, the pioneers, contacted us after seeing our Trash The Dress work. One of those trailblazers was Veronica, an African American woman whom we still remember and thank to this day. She lit the fire under a market that has since exploded in popularity. Nowadays, we can confidently say that our underwater photoshoots in cenotes are accessible to everyone, even those who are not exactly Michael Phelps. That’s right, even non-swimmers can take the plunge and make a splash in our stunning underwater photographs.
And let’s dive into another aspect of underwater modeling: birthday celebrations! Yes, you heard it right. We’ve had women of all ages join us in blowing out candles while flying underwater with numbers corresponding to their years. It’s a unique way to mark the occasion and create memories that will last a lifetime. And it’s not just birthdays – couples celebrating their anniversary or honeymoon also join us for frequent underwater sessions. It’s a perfect way to add some adventure and romance to the occasion.
And before we wrap up, it’s worth mentioning the incredible experience of underwater maternity photoshoots. These are not your average maternity photos. We’re talking about moms-to-be in their full glory, weightlessly floating around like they’re in space. They are the true queens of the underwater world, enjoying the freedom from gravity more than anyone else. For them, the photoshoot is like a spa day for their knees and legs. But for us behind the camera, it’s a heartwarming experience to imagine a little fishy inside the belly of a flying mom-to-be. It’s a sight that can tug at anyone’s heartstrings.

We can’t stress enough how much the beauty of our photoshoots owes to the location: the incredible cenotes. These geological wonders, exclusive to the Yucatan Peninsula, are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Over 6,000 of them, in all shapes and depths, some are so deep that you can’t even see the bottom! Others have an array of forms, with open-air stretches of water and caverns where rays of sunlight create amazing reflections.
But don’t be fooled – they’re not just small lakes. Lakes can have stagnant water, but not cenotes! The water here has been flowing continuously for centuries, and while it may not be a rushing river, the constant water exchange ensures crystal-clear transparency that’s hard to find elsewhere – a must-have for our underwater photography. To put it in simpler terms, imagine the terrain of the Yucatan Peninsula as a giant piece of Swiss cheese, with caves and tunnels linked together like a spiderweb, filled with the purest rainwater that flows effortlessly to the sea.
And let me tell you, the photos we have in this post are the result of our collaboration with the lovely Ciara. This woman is not only drop-dead gorgeous but also has a bubbly personality. She chose to celebrate her 40th birthday with us by posing for an epic underwater photoshoot in a cenote, complete with some shots among the lush vegetation of the place. We even set up an underwater swing for her, and seeing her swing like a mermaid brought us so much joy.
