As we have often said, our underwater photoshoots in the cenotes are a product intended for underwater modelling, underwater maternity, as well as for Trash The Dress in its underwater version.
However, within the latter, there are variations on the theme, more or less indirectly related to the wedding industry.
In other words, our underwater photography sessions are often also booked for engagements and honeymoons and even for wedding anniversaries. In the first two cases, the photos can be used for the invitation or thank-you cards, in the third case almost as an extension to the “old” wedding photos.
Sheila and Jorge, the Puerto Rican couple you see in these photos, booked this underwater photoshoot for their honeymoon. They had married a few days earlier in Massachusetts. Shortly before leaving for Mexico, where they were going to spend their first vacation as a married couple, they came across our underwater photos.
However, after getting in touch with us, Sheila told us that it would be difficult to bring their wedding dress down to Mexico. Fortunately, this was not a problem.
Aware of the need to organize Underwater Trash The Dress even before the Wedding Day, we have been providing our wedding dresses for free for many years. They are all dresses that past brides have given us nicely at the end of the photoshoot. We have about ten, and, on request, we send a list with their description, photos and sizes.
The one worn by Sheila is a new entry, received no more than a month ago from another bride.
We want to do some clarity around the wedding dresses to be used underwater. There are different types, but which is the best?
As always, the answer is: “It depends!”.
In general, the most beautiful effects are obtained with voluminous dresses that surround the bride. The resulting sense of weightlessness makes the photos even more magical.
Speaking of weight, the belief that a more voluminous dress is heavier is partially false. And I say “partially”, because the dress is heavier only if you are out of the water. Paradoxically, a very voluminous dress worn in the water makes the bride more buoyant than a less voluminous and simpler dress.
Do you remember the Archimedes principle? “Any object, totally or partially immersed in a fluid or liquid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.”
For this reason, less voluminous wedding dresses, even if less spectacular, are also the most comfortable to wear underwater.
In other words, the ideal wedding dress for underwater trash the dress sessions is a compromise between comfort and spectacularity.
But let’s go on the honeymoon for a moment. Do you know what its origin is and where does this saying come from?
There are different schools of thought, but the recurring elements are the lunar cycle duration (about 28 days, therefore almost a month) and the mead(!).
The latter is an alcoholic beverage produced from the fermentation of honey. To be more precise, it is even the oldest fermented product in the world, even more so than beer. In ancient times it was known as “the drink of the Gods”.
In various ancient cultures, reference is made to the first month of marriage during which the newly married couple consumed mead every day.
At the time of Babylonian civilization, there was the custom of giving the spouses a quantity of mead sufficient for the first month, considering it a fertility aid.
According to another theory, it is believed that the term “honeymoon” dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, honey was very expensive and therefore considered a symbol of wealth. The bride would take it to the bridegroom, and the first night (not the first month) was called “Honeymoon”.
Whatever the exact origin of the term, starting from the nineteenth century, the honeymoon has become a mass phenomenon, turning into a pause period after the stressful wedding preparations and the stress of the wedding day itself.
As you know, as well as underwater photographers, we are also wedding photographers. For this, we often have the same couple for both types of photography.
In our own small way, we can only confirm how much the bride and groom are more relaxed for the underwater photoshoot than they are on their wedding day.
In fact, they have already started their honeymoon.
