Underwater Wedding Photos in a cenote
It seems there are more than 6,000 cenotes scattered across the Yucatan peninsula. And they can be morphologically very different from each other. Some are like huge wells with circular walls and a cylindrical section, sometimes so deep that it is challenging to study their shape and possible connections with other cenotes. Weak water exchange and good exposure to sunlight cause the formation of abundant vegetation in many of them. The result is less water transparency or even a greenish tint.
Other cenotes, often with extremely irregular shapes, are instead parts of much larger and complex formations, with constant and abundant water flows. These are similar to a spider web that expands over hundreds of Km2, whose exact mapping is practically impossible.
Year after year, professional cave divers discover new portions of this magical hidden world. Occasionally they even come across human remains or artifacts, whose dating helps to calculate when those caves – now full of water – were instead dry and above sea level.

Our underwater photography sessions take place in two cenotes very close to each other, yet entirely different, which indeed are parts of a large and only partially discovered structure. The constant flow of water guarantees incredible water transparency.
The photos you see here were taken in the smaller of the two, which is a kind of half-cave partially open along one side. Due to the lush vegetation, the entrance receives only moderate sunlight. But this is enough to create an algae patina that would cover the rocks if the owners of the cenote would not “brush” them frequently. Some funny fishes swimming around are certainly an added value to the beauty of this place.
Moving inward, however, there is no more sunlight, and a minimum of illumination comes only from the reflection of the vegetation. These are unfavorable conditions for the formation of algae and, therefore, also for the presence of fish. But water is incredibly transparent and perfect for our photos.

Underwater Wedding Photos in a cenote
Two good reasons to choose this cenote.
One is privacy since we only rent it for ourselves for the time of the shooting and nobody can disturb us. Therefore, it is the ideal place for those interested in posing naked.
The second is the depth or – to put it better – the non-depth. Most of the bottom is so shallow that you can even stand. Consequently, it is perfect for those who do not feel very comfortable in the water. Despite the shallow depth, the outcome is what you see in these photos.
We conclude this short post by thanking Alyssia and Brent for joining the Underwater Trash The Dress experience with Sebi Messina Photography.
“We had an amazing time & experience with Sebi and his photography team! They were very professional and gave us great direction on how to pose and make our photos turn out fantastic! This was my husband & I first time doing something like this, and because of how comfortable we felt with Sebi, would definitely like to do something like this again. This experience and how it turned out was worth every dollar and every minute of the day. We highly recommend getting your special event photos taken by Sebi Messina! 😊”
