Our lives are often punctuated by rituals, accompanying the most important moments, some joyful, others less so. Let us overlook the latter and think instead of the former, precisely the merrier ones.
Among these is certainly the wedding, as the starting point of marriage, which once officially marked cohabitation, the birth of children, and everything else. Of course, today people cohabitate and have children well before marriage, but the symbolic value of the wedding remains intact.
However, there is another ritual that precedes the wedding. It marks the beginning of the official engagement, which, depending on culture and place, may begin differently. Once it certainly included “asking the hand” of the girl from her parents. Today everything has become simpler and at most it is just informing her family of the intentions to get married in the near future, presenting everything as already taken for granted. What has instead become more popular, being already engaged, is the marriage proposal, which takes place as a surprise in situations and locations that are also very different from each other.
Hence, surprise marriage proposals were born, to be planned in advance by working side by side with a photographer who can capture the guy who, on his knees, opens the box with the ring and asks her: “Will you marry me ?”
Short semi-serious digression. The Internet is full of comical episodes with rings that roll off and end up on the riverbed or the bottom of the sea. Fortunately, these are fairly rare cases. Most of the time everything unfolds for you in a less tragicomic way.
But back to us…
A few months ago, we received an email from Marco who lives in Switzerland. With his girlfriend, he was planning their vacation to Mexico. It was still a few months away, but he came up with the idea of taking advantage of the vacation to surprise his girlfriend and ask her the fateful: Will you marry me?
You will realize that usually, a normal photoshoot is something very simple to organize. But it is not so for a surprise photoshoot. In fact, in this case, it is necessary to orchestrate many small details so that the surprise is guaranteed, and the spontaneity of the moment is portrayed with timing.
Marco had no idea where to start. One detail came to his mind, however. A few days earlier, he and Melina had googled “things to do in Tulum” or something like that. A few minutes later, moving on with the search, they had come across our page and Melina had been particularly fascinated by our underwater photography in the cenotes. She had not immediately decided that she wanted to do it, but it was certainly something that appealed to her very much.
It was from our underwater photos found on Google that the plan for that surprise wedding proposal photoshoot began to take shape.
It should be mentioned that in some of our Underwater Modeling or Underwater Trash The Dress packages some on-land photos are also included, and they are necessary to capture the exact moment when the guy gets down on one knee, opens the ring box and asks: “Will you marry me?”
Marco then booked the underwater photoshoot in the cenote and informed Melina, who was obviously delighted with the idea. A parallel email exchange then began. Using the email address that Marco and Melina shared, we discussed general details about the photoshoot. Using Marco’s private email address, we finalized the actual surprise instead.
We thus agreed together on the details of the underwater photoshoot, but how and where to portray the marriage proposal was discussed separately.
On the morning of the photoshoot in the cenote, we greeted Marco and Melina at the entrance. We explained to them that it would be nice to take a few photos out of the water before diving in and starting with the actual underwater photoshoot. Melina showed herself to be very pleased. We had previously agreed with Marcos on the point and time at which he should kneel down, hand over the ring, and say (in German): Will you marry me?
And so, we did. We took some normal photos in the lush vegetation at the edge of the cenote and finally, with a nod of understanding in our eyes, Marco got the OK to declare his intentions toward the beautiful Melina, who could not hold back a few tears.
The photos you see are a brief excerpt of all the ones we handed over to them, but they offer an idea of what came out. The real ring was kept and a fake ring (orange and larger to be more visible) was handed back underwater for various new to funnier than the surprise marriage proposal.
