Tulum Underwater Modeling
After meeting Janet in person and spending half a day with her to take these underwater photos, we came to the conclusion that age is a very relative concept.
We had actually been in contact on Facebook for over a year. She had written to us after seeing Veronika’s underwater photos. But then came Covid and everything stopped. Even her project of a short vacation in Mexico in which she could include half a day for an underwater photoshoot in a cenote.
During this year and a half of “friendship” on Facebook, I began to realize how funny and witty she was (the memes she posts on a daily basis are simply amazing).
Until, a few weeks ago, she wrote us that she was finally going to be able to come to Mexico to celebrate her….. 70th birthday.

Since 2013 we’ve done a lot of underwater sessions. So you can easily imagine how rich the sampling of people we met is. Couples and singles of every race, size, color, political views, and sexual orientation have joined us to experience the thrill and magic of being portrayed underwater. Whether it was Underwater Trash The Dress, Underwater Engagement, Underwater Honeymoon, Underwater Anniversary, Underwater Sweet Sixteen, Underwater Maternity, or, just for the fun of it, Underwater Modeling, the experience we have acquired over the years is priceless. And I’m not referring to the photographic technique, but to the pleasure of dealing with people of all types and ages. Until yesterday, between 11 and 60 years old.
With Janet, we had the chance to move the bar even higher: 70 years old! If we had asked ourselves that question when we started our underwater photoshoots in the cenotes several years ago, we would not have believed it.
What have we learned from her?
We have learned that age, as we said a few lines above, is a relative concept.
Tulum Underwater Modeling
In our innate need to categorize everything, we always tend to create groups in which we insert facts, data, people, things. It is an absolutely natural process that serves to simplify what we perceive from the outside world. And everything that is part of a group tends to share very specific characteristics.
Take age, for example. At any age, we tend to associate certain capacities, potentials, skills. Of course, there is nothing wrong with this. Our physical and cognitive conditions change over time. And so it is with our performance. That is why when we jog in our 50s we cannot expect the same speed and pace from ourselves as we did in our 20s. There is a physical decay that prevents us from doing so.
However, it happens all too often that advancing age leads us to become trapped within the narrow limits of these groups or patterns. In other words: at a certain age, it is possible to do certain things, at another not. This is true, but not always.
If in our 50’s we cannot expect to run as fast as in our 20’s, this does not mean that we have to hang up our boots. If our health conditions still allow us, we can and must continue to run, even if it is slower.
BUT what does this have to do with Janet and her underwater modeling photoshoot in a cenote?
Well, we believe that Janet is a person who has never hung up her boots. And for that we sincerely admire her. She doesn’t claim to be in her twenties, but she does keep challenging herself and trying to do a little more than her age would normally allow. And this is her strength. So here are her 100 Pilates classes, her Open Water Diver Certification, her skydiving (twice), her hike with gorillas in Rwanda, her night in a hotel made of ice in Canada, her walk among lions in Botswana, and lately this underwater photoshoot in a cenote, here in Mexico, as an underwater model. Forever young in her 70’s.
We can only learn from her….

We don’t know how many of you are thinking about emulating Janet. But let’s try to give you some general information on how an Underwater Modeling photoshoot in a cenote works with us.
Let’s start with you? Can you swim? If the answer is no, know that, with a few more tricks, you can still model underwater. We’ll only need a few more minutes to get you comfortable and we’ll have you model in the shallowest parts of the cenote. All without stress.
How deep are the cenotes? Our underwater photoshoots are held in two cenotes, each quite different in depth. One is public, the other is private. Most of our underwater sessions take place in the public one, which has an outdoor part exposed to sunlight and another part in a cave with mixed light. The bottom has a variable depth, between 1 and 10 meters.
The private cenote, on the other hand, is very shallow; you can even stand in most of it. It offers more privacy (but costs much more) and is much smaller than the public one.
What should we wear? We always recommend something in a solid, light color. White is always good, red too, as long as it is not dark (perfect the red used by Janet). In any case, we need to create contrasts and the dress must stand out from the background. If you are overweight you might want to consider tops or even loose pants, to which you can add a long skirt.
Furthermore, all the props you see in our underwater photos, especially the multicolor fabrics, are ours and made available for free.
In any case, we are always available to give you any additional information you may need.
As for Janet, not only we thank her for the wonderful experience, but we also sincerely hope to meet her again in 10 years for her 80th birthday and – of course – to photograph her once more.
Ciao Janet!
And thanks also for the lovely review you posted about your experience with us.
“I wanted to do something different for a BiG birthday. Well, I saw some of Sebi Messina’s underwater photography on Facebook.so I signed up in June 2021. What a fabulous experience. The pictures, colors, props, and Sebi’s attention to detail like sun rays, shadows, rocks, angles. He is simply amazing, fun, and very professional. . His beautiful wife and darling son assisted with the shoot and were so kind and helpful throughout the several-hour shoot.
Never once did I feel rushed In any way. At first, I thought the shoot was expensive but after experiencing it, I changed my mind. Very good value for the money. Sebi actually scuba dives and has very quality and 1st class equipment. I can not say enough about the experience and how wonderful Sebi Messina and his lovely family were. I love his couple shots. They are so romantic !!!! Who knows I may be back next year for some wedding photos. Do it. So different and so cool. Janet”
