Thinking about it, everything we can, or can’t, do in life is the product of our willpower. And this applies to a little bit of everything.
Cassandra contacted us after seeing the underwater images we had created with Herman a few weeks earlier. Seeing that black boy, who flew underwater with the grace of an angel during a dark and rainy day, must have sparked an unexpected desire in her to try something similar.
Nothing strange so far; 99% of our couples or models contact us and book a cenote underwater photoshoot after stumbling upon our images on Facebook, Instagram, or after a quick Google search.
But there was one detail to consider. Cassandra can’t swim. That’s why we started this post talking about willpower, which allows us to do (almost) everything.
Having requests from people who can’t swim is not very frequent, but not too rare. Believe it or not, sometimes we learn it just a few minutes before entering the water. But even in these cases, surprise aside, we aren’t forced to make significant changes in the way we perform an Underwater Cenote Photoshoot.
On the other hand, Cassandra said from the beginning that she was not “good in the water.”
We then explained to her that we would take our time until she felt comfortable in the water before starting our Underwater Cenote Photoshoot. However, it didn’t take long to convince her that she too could model underwater in a cenote.

Well! If we were to think about the difference between an Underwater Cenote Photoshoot made with a girl who cannot swim, the only difference that comes to mind is the very little extra time we allow ourselves to take her to her comfort zone. For the rest, there is no difference.
Let’s clarify now that the choice to carry and load all the diving equipment is not an absolute necessity for this type of photography. Instead, it is a very specific choice, aimed at optimizing the Cenote Underwater Photoshoot times and allowing the production of better and more varied photos.
The poses are explained one at a time. Sebi dives and, when ready, beckons to the assistant on the surface. And eventually, the assistant gives the okay to the couple or model for her to dive.
The images taken for each pose are checked on the camera monitor. Depending on their quality, it is decided to repeat the pose or continue with the next.
Cassandra needed her time to feel comfortable, and we obviously never rushed her. But if we think of the first photos taken during her Underwater Cenote Photoshoot and compare them with the last ones, the feeling we have is that they were two different people.
In fact, a Cenote Underwater Modeling session is like a progression, where at the beginning, the model is still unsure of herself, perhaps a little stiff, especially if she can’t swim. However, as the underwater photoshoot continues, she becomes much more confident and brings out the best in herself.
Now, we would like to take advantage of this post to answer once again one of the most frequently asked questions: How deep is a cenote?
Before answering, we would like to point out that we work in at least two different cenotes. One is private, and the other is public.
Privacy – as it is easy to guess – is the undoubted advantage of the first. Being private, it is the most suitable place for those wishing to model even naked. However, it is a small cenote, a half cave, open on one side and surrounded by truly splendid vegetation. It is also very shallow, so that you can stand up in most of it.
The second cenote, on the other hand, is public and much larger than the private one. Occasionally, we’ve taken nude or semi-nude photos there as well. As for depth, this is not as shallow as the first one. It has some points where you can stand, others where you can comfortably cling to rocks. However, the depth does not reach 10 meters.
The Underwater Cenote photoshoot with Cassandra took place in the public cenote. With her we obviously skipped the deepest points and concentrated the various poses in the shallowest parts of the cenote.
