For some time now, Tulum has become an extremely popular destination for African American tourism. Small groups, couples, but also many singles fly in from all over the United States for short stays and long weekends. Who can blame them?
The whole Riviera Maya is a perfect place for vacations, but Tulum, more than other locations, perfectly meets the expectations of those who come to Mexico mainly for the nightlife, not only for the sun or the sea.
Those who travel to Tulum are not the usual frequenters of the big all-inclusive resorts, where guests tend to spend the entire vacation, except for a few excursions in the surroundings. In Tulum comes instead a rather young clientele, who tends to book a stay in an Airbnb, sometimes hiring a personal chef, and who in the evening tends to frequent bars or clubs where they can meet other travelers on the same wavelength. In short, the perfect place for a “certain” type of vacation.
Contrary to what happened in the past, word of mouth has become perhaps the most important criterion when planning a vacation (obviously, this does not only apply to Tulum). Facebook is full of traveler groups where members exchange detailed information about bars, restaurants, accommodations, and excursions. And photoshoots….
We started offering our underwater photoshoots in the Tulum area in 2013. We already knew the magic of the cenotes and the idea to combine the passion for photography with the passion for diving was the base of our relocation to Mexico, coming from old Europe.
Those of you who have known and followed us for a long time, know that most of our underwater photoshoots in Tulum are aimed at the wedding industry. The Riviera Maya is in fact one of the most important places for destination weddings. For this reason, we organize Underwater Trash The Dress photoshoots in cenotes and most of our clients are newlywed couples who come to us a few of days after their wedding.
The big difference between a wedding and an Underwater Photoshoot in Tulum is the extreme tranquility that characterizes the latter. While a wedding is a succession of rigid and prefixed events, with even some moments of stress, an underwater shooting in a cenote is exactly the opposite. The couple is much more relaxed and there is no rigid timeline to follow. All this makes for greater spontaneity in the photos. Which is no small thing.
Parallel to our Underwater Trash The Dress photoshoots, variations on the theme have been added over the years. So we started organizing sessions of Underwater Maternity, Underwater Honeymoon, Underwater Anniversary and, last but not least, Underwater Modelling.
In the beginning, these were just occasional shootings, but they certainly helped us to create a portfolio of underwater photo sessions aimed at singles.
Until one day, a beautiful black woman contacted us to book her Underwater Photoshoot in Tulum. She had found us through a simple Google search and booked just two days later after a brief email exchange.
The result of that underwater shooting in a cenote exceeded her expectations and a couple of weeks later a post of her in some Facebook groups was enough for us to receive dozens and dozens of inquiries. Most of them coming from African Americans. Many of them turned into reservations.
Obviously, the pandemic had a drastic impact on tourism worldwide. And Mexico was no exception. After a period of low activity, by the end of 2020, we were all happy to return to an almost normal situation.
Of our African American models, Chantelle was certainly among the best.
She contacted us because she wanted to celebrate her 42nd birthday in an unusual way. She had also come across our photos, seeing those of other extraordinary African American models who had joined us for a Cenote Underwater Photoshoot in Tulum.
As is often the case, after reviewing our packages, within a few hours she had already booked.
Our cenotes are located about twenty minutes drive north of Tulum. One is public and the other is private. Her choice was the public one.
The private cenote is a very small one, surrounded by amazing tropical vegetation. It is a half cave open along one side and very shallow. It is normally chosen by those who prioritize privacy (for example if they want to pose naked). Being private has a much higher cost.
The public cenote, with beautiful surrounding vegetation, is much larger and is divided into two parts, one outside and one in the cave. And it offers many more spots for underwater photography.
The poses possible in one cenote are very different from those possible in the other.

Talk about a renewed spirit for my 42nd Birthday🥳💛🧜🏾🌞🐠. After 2020, I needed to do something NEW (in Mexico)!!!! Nothing like being in the water; soft enough to cleanse you, powerful enough to drown you and deep enough to save you ✨🌊✨🌊 . This was truly a Lifetime & Fun experience!!!! I felt so comfortable and safe with Sebi Messina and his team
