Same-Sex Wedding Cancun
As we cover more and more same-sex weddings in Mexico, we are delighted to see how cultural stereotypes are gradually being broken down so that much of what was impossible yesterday has now become normal.
Today we can say with pleasure that heterosexuality as an indispensable legal condition in couple relationships, fortunately, belongs to the past, at least in some countries. It is not a small thing!
However, it is understandable that the application of more progressive and secular laws, which make it possible to officially seal a relationship between two people of the same sex, takes time.
But it is also natural to ask why it was not possible before. And above all, why is it still not so in many countries?
The answer is not easy, but it is obviously traceable to both religion, cultural references, education, principles, which can also be very different depending on the country.
However, to move away from what, honestly or not, a specific society has believed in for centuries means to question almost everything about it. And doing so can generate insecurity and fear of how things will change. The secularization of a society is, therefore, a long, complicated, and sometimes painful process.
But the kids of tomorrow will undoubtedly take many things for granted that have not been for their parents.
Yet the celebration of a same-sex wedding, which we now consider normal at certain latitudes, is a novelty no more than twenty years old. Holland was the first country to approve it in November 2001, followed by Belgium in 2003 and Canada in 2005 …
Here in Mexico, in Quintana Roo, where Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum are located, the same-sex wedding has been possible since 2012.
Hence, since 2012, the entire Riviera Maya, a prime importance location for the destination wedding industry, has begun to adapt to this new market segment.
In wedding photography, this meant recalibrating some aspects of the logistics of a wedding day.
The first thing that comes to mind is the timing of Getting Ready.
In the case of a two brides wedding, the adage that “It’s all about the bride” doubles its importance. It means that, if in the Wedding day timeline, we usually allocate at least an hour to the Bride’s Getting Ready and only half an hour to that of the groom, covering the preparations of two brides requires at least 2 hours.
There are also variations in the wording. Most of the terms used are expressly gender-related. Think for example of the word “groomsman”, which we all also use a lot during the wedding day. A two-brides wedding doesn’t have a groom and therefore no groomsmen. For this reason, we invented the word “bridesmen”, which is a nice and funny neologism.
Even the poses that, in a heterosexual wedding, involve fairly standardized roles, in a two-brides wedding must be recalibrated. For this reason, the best choice is to let the two brides arrange themselves in the most spontaneous way.
Furthermore, for a same-sex wedding, even more than for a heterosexual wedding, meeting before the big day is essential. We are convinced that feeling at ease and trusting in the person who will photographically record the unfolding of events improves the quality of the photos that will be produced.
If you don’t feel comfortable, you tend to be stiff. And this could affect the outcome, so getting to know each other earlier is better.
In Lauren and Skyler’s case, during the exchange of correspondence, it was clear to us that Skyler was a little shy and not very comfortable with the idea of being photographed.
When we met the day before the wedding, we had confirmation that Lauren (of Italian origin) was as volcanic as we expected, while Skyler was instead a little quieter.
Sitting in the lobby for a few minutes, with the excuse of a last check of the timeline, was a perfect opportunity to get in tune and generate trust between the photographer and the two brides.
Then we took a short walk in the resort, which we had never worked in before, scouting the most exciting corners to create beautiful photos.
The Dreams Natura is a brand new hotel, located a few kilometres south of Cancun, where it was a pleasure to work.
We wish Lauren and Skyler all the best.
