A short introduction to Underwater couple photography
– The way we do it –
If you are reading these words, it is because the idea of a couple underwater photoshoot somehow intrigues you.
Many of you might have never seen anything like this before, nor imagined this type of underwater photography existed, at least for ordinary people with no previous experience in underwater modelling.
Therefore, the most common reaction is thinking not to be capable of it, which is fine, although difficult to admit. But a rational explanation is still sought. And the most frequent one is to argue that spoiling a wedding dress would be a shame (which is not true, but we will talk about it later).
For the moment, we confirm instead that almost 100% of couples or models joining our Underwater Trash The Dress photoshoots had no previous experience with (underwater) modelling. They were just ordinary couples who – exactly like you now – one day stumbled upon some photos and fell in love with the idea of living a unique experience in life.

But let’s go back for a moment to the dress that some are afraid of damaging…
It is a myth to dispel! The dress doesn’t get damaged at all.
Unlike in the sea, water in the cenote is fresh. And unlike in a swimming pool, it does not contain chlorine. It means that after an Underwater Trash The Dress session in a cenote, the dress ends up being cleaner than it was at the end of the wedding day.
Eventually, you will just have to hang it to dry in your hotel room. And the next day it will be ready to be put back in your suitcase to take it home.
Nonetheless, some brides prefer to use another dress, expressly bought for the photo session. It is an option you might want to consider.
However, the simplest and cheapest alternative is to wear one of our wedding dresses. We have several of them, in different sizes and shapes. And they are all available for free.
Once we have made it clear that the dress won’t be harmed, we return to the initial doubt. Would you be able to do it?
Over the years, we have met couples of all types and ages. Some of them extremely young, slender and agile, others less young, less slim, but no less motivated. None of them was unable to complete a photo shoot. And the outcome is what you see in the many pages of our website. Many of these photos hang on the walls of houses and apartments all over the world.

But let’s see how it works.
Each session is preceded by a quick briefing in which we provide some straightforward instructions.
- FACIAL EXPRESSION: It must be as natural as possible, without swollen cheeks and tight mouth.
- EYES: They must stay wide open. The water is fresh and chlorine-free; therefore, it does not burn.
- TIME: Not more than ten (!) seconds per descent. You thought more, didn’t you?
- DEPTH: The two cenotes we use have a variable depth. However, believe it or not, for most poses, you won’t need to dive more than a few centimetres (and only for a few seconds). Basically, you will never exceed a meter.
At each session, there are three of us. One stays onshore; two are in the water. The first one is Sebi, who is an advanced diver with PADI certification, wearing his diving equipment. The second one is an assistant, who helps him with the lights and all the props (fabrics, starfish, flowers, umbrellas …).
Last but not least, we want you to enjoy the experience as much as we do. So no rush at all.
Special thanks to Ashley and Mike, the beautiful couple from Las Vegas portrayed in the photos of this post.
Their Trash The Dress took place two days after their wedding at Villa Zoëtry in Isla Mujeres. You may want to take a look at their photos in this link: Ashely and Mike’s Wedding

MADE THE WHOLE WEDDING AMAZING!
I am at a loss of words for how happy I am we choose Sebi as our photographer. Besides our amazing photos (which I will get to later) the Sebi experience is one of a kind. He makes you feel so comfortable and beautiful from step one. Before your wedding day, he gets to know you so that he can take photos to match your personality. He met us the day before our wedding to check out the venue so he could plan then not on the wedding day. (We got lost on our way, and Sebi waited an over an hour for us).
On the day of our wedding, he directed everyone where to be to make the best photos and was awesome with my son ( who was terribly grumpy that day). We also did the trash the dress at the cenote where he picked us up from our friend’s house, but not only that then drove us all the way to Tulum even though we insisted we could take a cap. Talk about amazing! He and his team are all nice, funny, and just amazing people to be around.
Now to the photos, I CANNOT stop looking at them, they are so creative and beautiful. I wish I could post them all to share here but I will just show my favourites, everyone who sees my photos is amazed at how they turned out and how beautiful they are. A quote from a co-worker “This is something I would pay a lot of money to hang out on my wall”
