Black model Monique
There are special people with whom you immediately get in tune. Monique is one of them. And it was great to be radiated by her charge of sympathy and positivity, which eventually also helps to create beautiful photos.
She had contacted us almost a year ago, after seeing the underwater photos we had taken with Veronica (another beautiful black lady full of energy) in a cenote just north of Tulum.
Monique knew she could do the same thing. And she was so motivated that she had managed to persuade some of her friends to do the same.

Then came Covid, and the lives of all of us changed. Monique – and not just her – had to change her plans. But her desire to be a Black Underwater Model remained intact.
When the restrictions relaxed, she contacted us to finally be able to organize an underwater photoshoot in a cenote.

As you may have read in our posts, our sessions take place in two different cenotes. One is public, and the other is private. And it’s hard to say which one we like to work in the most.
So, when our customers, before booking, ask us which is better we prefer to describe them in detail, specifying the pros and cons of each cenote, and leave them the choice.

The public cenote is larger than the private one. Therefore, it also offers a greater variety of spots and poses. It has a fairly large external part that allows us to take photos with sunlight, or at least with good natural brightness. The second part, on the other hand, is a cave which, in optimal conditions, offers spectacular lighting and even better water transparency. The only drawback is probably that it is a public cenote so that you will cross paths with other visitors.
The private cenote is much smaller instead. It has splendid vegetation, much more beautiful and lush than that of the public cenote. And above all, it is private. It means we rent it only for ourselves and no one else can enter, which makes the package more expensive. Nonetheless, it is still a considerable advantage for those who consider privacy a priority, especially for those who are interested in posing nude. Another advantage is its depth. The private cenote is very shallow, which is very important for those who – rightly or wrongly – believe that they do not feel very comfortable in the water and – above all – underwater.
Monique and her friend chose the private cenote for two individual sessions on the same day. And it was a good choice because we had the opportunity to take some photos out of the water before starting the highlight of the shooting, which is precisely the underwater part.
Very welcome guest of Monique’s underwater photoshoot was her sweet sister, who is perfectly set in this corner of the world.
But let us point out a common feature of our underwater sessions, which is time.
Behind our images, there is above all time. It is the time that we give our models, brides, couples to get used to something – very simple – but perhaps they have never done before. Stay underwater for a few seconds (no more than 10 or 15) at a depth of only a few inches.
Some need a quarter of an hour, others just a few minutes. Others do it immediately as if they have been doing it for a lifetime. In any case, we always adapt to them, without haste.
And then there is the time we take for editing. Which for us, means on average about 45 minutes for each delivered photo. Oh yeah! Because underwater photography – if properly done – is a beast of its own. And the process of turning bluish-green images into something so crystal clear and with such real colours is anything but straightforward. In the end, however, a candid question gratifies us to death: “But was this photo really taken underwater?
We thank Monique once again for choosing us in this Underwater modelling adventure, certain that our paths will cross again.
