For a number of very different reasons, there always comes a time in our lives when we take stock. Looking back we realize that the things we didn’t do are many more than all the things we would have liked to do.
And sometimes the fear of not being able to do them in time arises. Then our life speeds up, and in a short time, we try to make up for lost time.
This is not the place to philosophize about why this happens. But there may be many reasons: a failed marriage behind us, or the awareness of time passing, or children who are now independent and go their own way. But the day comes when we decide that maybe it’s time to think of ourselves above all, compensating for the time dedicated to others. And you want to do it quickly, without waiting any longer.
There are many ways to do this, perhaps starting a strict diet that has been put off for too long, or attending meditation or dance classes, or perhaps learning a new language.
Very often, instead, you start to travel. And if you haven’t done it for years, suddenly you find yourself taking several trips, even short ones, in the space of a year. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend on the same wavelength as you. And during these trips, you try to include as many activities as possible, which you share in real-time on social media.
And this newfound zest for life, which many of our clients share, seems to us to be something very impressive.
As Tulum Underwater photographers, we represent one of those favorite activities during their short stays in the beautiful Riviera Maya.
Occasionally, the approach from their side seems more oriented to something quick and immediate. This does not surprise us. On the one hand, because of the above-mentioned reasons (their desire to fill the time available on vacation with as many activities as possible).
On the other hand, because of a rampant tendency to do everything quickly, like a touch and go. These are what we consider the deleterious effects of the prolonged use of cell phones. The culture of the finger continuously scrolling photos on Instagram on the tiny screen of a cell phone, to dispense here and there the honor of a like.
Mind you, we have nothing against Instagram and less than ever against the use of mobile phones, which have become our inseparable companions, the last thing we look at before going to sleep and probably the first thing we look for when we wake up.
In addition, Instagram is one of the most useful tools for marketing purposes for any large or small company. But there are still the limitations of the small size of what you see. You can’t choose your wedding photographer (or your “Tulum Underwater photographer”) on the tiny screen of a phone.
In order to appreciate a photograph, and all the work that goes into it, larger dimensions are required. Otherwise, it would be like debasing and trivializing the art of photography itself. And this would be a pity.

So social media are welcome, but let’s use them only for the first contact. Then, when we have time, let’s move to a computer screen, enter the web page and enjoy the view of the beautiful photos that professionals have created.
But let’s go back to our charming travelers who, like Proust, go in search of lost time.
Many of them, in the rush to do “everything” in the shortest possible time, sometimes expect to get high-quality underwater photos in cenotes, in a matter of seconds. They probably imagine that taking an underwater photoshoot in a cenote is just like taking normal photos, maybe on a sunny day, using a simple cell phone.
We feel sorry for you. That’s not how it works. Underwater photography, in cenotes or not, at least in the way we do it, requires time, skills, knowledge, patience, years of experience, investment in high-end equipment, etc.
Yes! Someone out there may offer extremely cheap solutions, using cheap equipment. And it is also possible that an untrained eye will consider anything it sees as “dope” (of course, we are only talking about underwater photography), but even the untrained eye, if comparing photos on a computer screen, will be able to understand what quality means in an underwater photoshoot and why the work of one photo studio might be better than another.
By education, culture, and philosophy of life, in a market that is perhaps a little too superficial, we have chosen to give priority to quality. It’s like saying that if we were in the gastronomy business, we would offer high-cuisine dishes instead of cheap fast food.
Finally, we would like to sincerely thank Waheedah who, while trying to get a lot done in the few days she spent here in Mexico, took the time to take some underwater pictures in a cenote near Tulum, in no hurry, having a lot of fun.
Right after stumbling upon some of our photos that another of our models had posted on Facebook, she contacted us asking for prices and information about our packages.
After reviewing them, she chose to have her underwater photoshoot in a public cenote, which is where most of our photo sessions take place.
Half an hour after contacting us, she had already booked.
These are some of the photos we took with her.
And this is her comment about her experience with us
“Fun in the Water is something I look forward to every chance I get. 💃🏾 My fun in this water…. with Sebi Messina was absolutely amazing. 🥰 Unlike any other water play I’ve experienced … this photoshoot was over the top FUN. I had an amazing experience. 🔥 Sebi my photographer was absolute A+ and creative which you can see by the images. YES, these shots were totally underwater. 💧
Cenotes are swimming pools of freshwater. All the water from the rain in the Riviera Maya area is filtered through the limestone and transformed into underwater rivers. Cenotes are sinkholes or natural pits, the result of collapsed limestone bedrock that exposes the water that normally flows beneath the earth.”
