Taking care of underwater photography in Mexico means experiencing emotions that are difficult to find elsewhere. If it is true that the ocean is splendid everywhere, it is also true that cenotes are a prerogative of Mexico and – specifically – of the Yucatan peninsula.
The transparency of the water, crucial for our type of photography, has very precise geological reasons. Due to its karst nature, the Yucatan subsoil is a web of tunnels and caves through which flows the abundant rainwater filtered by the soil itself. Exposure to sunlight is only sporadic. Therefore, with little light or even complete darkness, no form of vegetation can grow. This may seem like a negative thing, but for water transparency, it is exactly the opposite. In the absence of vegetation, the waste produced by the decay of the plants themselves will decrease or will be practically null, and the water remains crystal clear.
But doing underwater photography in Mexico also means having to work in different light conditions. For this reason, we also use external cenotes that have some exposure to direct sunlight. But out there we only take a certain number of poses. Right after that, we move into the cave where the conditions of water transparency are even better.
Unlike open waters, cenotes are not affected by the weather. Except for extraordinary events, such as the passage of a hurricane, our underwater photography sessions take place all year round.
Underwater Trash the Dress has been and continues to be our flagship product since the beginning. It is with newlywed couples that we started with this type of photography in 2013, after a brave relocation to Mexico from Europe, when we moved here to the Riviera Maya precisely to bring together two old passions: diving and photography.
Photographing underwater is something much more challenging than normal photography. As you can easily guess, if humidity is not a great friend of electrical circuits, water is even less so. Hence the need to protect the camera with very expensive housings that often cost more than the camera itself and the lenses put together.
Obviously, the camera plus the housing, and the dome are very bulky and heavy. But that’s not all, because the use of powerful underwater flashes, also very heavy, is an absolute necessity if you want to get quality pictures. In fact, the water works as a strong filter that literally cuts the frequencies of which the light is composed. The first color to be eliminated is red, which turns into an uninviting brown and explains why underwater photos have a strong bluish-green tint. Precisely to remedy this modification of colors, it is necessary to use flashes, which magically bring the colors closer to their natural splendor.
Up to here what concerns the equipment to realize our underwater photography in Mexico. But the files produced by our cameras are far from the finished product that our clients receive. And the transition from the flatness of a raw file to the final jpg can be condensed into a number: 45! That’s the time – in minutes – that each of our shots takes, on average, to transform an uninviting greenish image into a small surreal masterpiece where the model or the newlywed couple almost seems to be flying.
Over time, the evolution of Trash The Dress has led us to propose new products. Among them, the underwater modeling sessions for single women have been for some years now one of the most successful formulas in our underwater photography in Mexico.
Although modeling underwater may seem to be something within the reach of a few, it is actually very simple. So simple that – with a certain frequency – we even have non-swimmers. Also for them, it’s just a matter of following very simple instructions that are explained and tested – in the water – before we start taking pictures. All without any hurry.
Only when you feel ready and have entered your comfort zone do we start with the actual photoshoot.
Contrary to most of the women or girls that come underwater with us without any past modeling experience, Chrisandra works in the fashion industry as a model. However, it must be said that she has never modeled underwater before, nor is she an avid swimmer.
We asked her to make slow and graceful movements, like a classical dancer in slow motion. And she, after a few minutes of adaptation, immediately proved to be extremely graceful even underwater.
As you can see, a constant in our underwater photography here in Mexico is the use of multicolored fabrics. Of all our props this is probably the one we use most frequently. Multicolored fabrics make our images more ethereal and vibrant. Their lightness emphasizes, even more, the magic of posing almost weightless which, if you think about it, is like fulfilling the ancestral dream of flying.
