We visited the Taak Bi Ha cenote for the first time more or less at the beginning of 2020. A colleague had organized a presentation aimed at using the cenote as a wedding venue.
I liked the place right away. It was a type of cenote that I had never seen before and it immediately reminded me of the film version of Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, an old childhood read.
Of course, rather than as a ceremonial venue, I saw it with the eyes of the underwater photographer.
But how was it different from the cenotes we normally use for our Underwater Trash The Dress or Underwater Modelling, or Maternity sessions?
Well! The biggest difference is that it is a huge cave where no sunlight enters at all. Lighting is provided by large lamps hanging from the (very high) ceiling, next to the huge elephant-foot-shaped roots that drop down from the vegetation above. Without these lamps, the darkness would be practically absolute.
In fact, the only openings are really tiny and even on a sunny day, the light coming in would be almost zero. The first of them is only a small hole used by divers to lower their tanks, tying them to ropes. The second one is what we could too generously call “the entrance to the cenote”. Also tiny, it is a very steep staircase of about twenty steps, not very comfortable to walk down.
As soon as you start to descend, the first thing you notice is the great humidity. I do not think it is much hotter than outside, but it is certainly more humid. Then, just a few steps below you have a wonderful view of this enormous cenote, full of stalactites and stalagmites, whose water is so turquoise that it is difficult to describe it. When I first saw it, it seemed like a dream and this corner of the earth appeared to me as a truly magical place.
At first glance, you might think that the lack of sunlight is a negative aspect for underwater photography. In reality, this is not the case at all.
The reason is simple. Sunlight is responsible for the formation and existence of vegetation. So what? You will say… Well! Plants have their life cycle, which ends with the disintegration of what remains of the leaves and stems in the water, which then becomes cloudy.
Lack of sunlight prevents chlorophyll photosynthesis and thus plant life itself. The result is extremely transparent water that is the most important ally in our underwater photoshoots.
At this point, you may be wondering what kind of water conditions many of our photos were taken, in in the cenotes where we normally work. Are they also caves and not exposed to sunlight?
The answer is No! Sunlight should not be criminalized.
In the cenotes where our underwater photoshoots have been taking place for almost 10 years, we always manage to make the most of the available light conditions. The cenote we use the most is divided into two parts. An external one (exposed to the sunlight) and a cave with side openings from which, through the vegetation, beautiful sun rays fall into the water.
Just this variety, together with a considerable width and a targeted timing (the result of years of experience), continues to make us prefer it as the first choice for all our underwater photoshoots.
So, is it worth organizing a photoshoot at Taak Bi Ha for an Underwater Trash The Dress or Underwater Modeling?
The answer is yes! Although the choice of which cenote to go to is obviously left up to you.
I would say that if you were at your first experience with an underwater photoshoot, you might consider our usual cenote as the most suitable choice for you.
But for some time now we have had more and more people who have modeled underwater with us and would like to repeat the experience. Obviously, it makes more sense to do it in a different cenote. I would say that it is to them that we recommend a photoshoot at the Taak Bi Ha cenote.
Thanks to the numerous stalactites and stalagmites, the bottom is really unique and mysterious. And the experience will be magical.
The best advice I can give you is to compare the photos of the other underwater photoshoots in the other posts on this blog and choose the one you like best.
No one is stopping you from trying both cenotes on two different days.
This is what Alzbeta did, the charming Czech girl you can see in these pictures.
She was the one who got us out of our comfort zone (our usual cenote) and into a new environment, one we didn’t know, where we experienced the magic pleasure of improvisation.
We would like to thank her most sincerely for giving us this opportunity.
Although we are sure that we will meet her very soon for new underwater photoshoots, maybe in another cenote…
And these are the words with which she kindly spent to comment on “our” underwater photoshoot at cenote Taak Bi Ha.
Review
“There are times when a seemingly trivial event can give you a burst of optimism and joy of living that you immediately want to share with others. 🤪
I must say that I am a lover of Mexico, its culture, food 🍹, climate, colors. I often go there on vacation, and every stay is a great experience and a decompression break in everyday life.
Just before Christmas 🎄, while planning my next trip to the Tulum area, I came across some underwater photos taken in the cenotes. It wasn’t the first time I had seen some of them, but the ones I saw that night looked spectacular and far superior to anything I had seen before. So I thought to myself, “What if?”
To make a long story short, I ended up booking two separate photoshoots 📸 at two different cenotes.
I won’t go into praise because I think the images above are worth more than a thousand words (perhaps someone else had already said it before me…). But Sebi Messina’s work is truly extraordinary. He is a madman with an attention to detail that is hard to imagine. Beware of cheap competitors. His work is worth every penny.
I wish everyone an experience like this, and I’ll definitely be back to do it again.“
