Those who follow us and frequently read our posts know that our underwater photography has the wedding industry as its main target. That’s why most of our underwater shootings are trash the dress, which we organize for newlywed couples. Variations on the theme can be considered the Underwater anniversaries, honeymoons, or engagements. Therefore it often happens that our photos are used also for wedding invitations or thank you cards. The other two segments, totally independent from the wedding industry, are instead Underwater Maternity and Underwater Modelling.
A new entry is the Underwater Sweet 16, practically a session of underwater modeling having as a model a girl who is turning 16.
For the very few who do not know what a Sweet 16 is, we can simplify a lot by saying that it is a celebration of a very special birthday. In reality, it is a ritual that marks the transition from childhood to young womanhood or even adulthood. In different cultures, it can have different nuances and be celebrated in different ways and at different times.
For example, in the Jewish tradition, it has more marked religious connotations and is celebrated both for girls and boys, respectively at the age of 12 and 13. In the first case it takes the name of Bat mitzvah and in the second of Bar mitzvah.
A very famous variant among the noble classes is the coming of age of young people between 17 and 19 years old. It dates back to the times of the Habsburg Empire and, in Vienna, it is still celebrated today with the famous Opernball.
But let’s go back to the other side of the ocean, where the celebration of the “quinceañera” is common to every Latin American country. Depending on the economic possibilities, it can be very simple, but also extremely lavish. In the 1960s, Hispanic emigration helped to spread the tradition of the “quinceañera” to the United States and to merge it with that of the Sweet Sixteen.
But let’s go back to the Underwater Sweet 16. What is it all about? How can it be organized?
The first piece of advice we would like to give you is to take a look at our underwater cenote images both of Trash The Dress and Underwater Modelling.
Try to show them to your daughter, trying to understand if she likes this kind of photography and if the idea of an Underwater Sweet 16 excites her.
For her to better understand how our underwater photography sessions work, show her our YouTube channel as well. You’ll find short clips showing the behind-the-scenes footage, where you can especially appreciate the transition and the difference between motion-picture and finished, cleaned, and edited photos. It is very likely that the idea of an Underwater Sweet 16 will begin to fascinate her.
Does your daughter need any special skills to model underwater for her Sweet Sixteen? Straight answer: No!
She simply has to know how to swim a little bit. That is all. Our underwater photography sessions are so simple and safe that we occasionally even have to deal with models who can’t swim. With a few extra precautions, everything goes smoothly as always. We would also like to point out that Sebi is an advanced certified diver (Padi), who wears all diving equipment during the photoshoot. At his side, in the water, there is always at least one assistant, indispensable for lights and props.
Our underwater photography sessions take place in two cenotes. One is private and the other is public.
The first one is very small. It is a very shallow semi-cave with a side opening that extends horizontally for about 30 meters. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and has the great advantage of privacy. We often use it for models or brides who want to pose nude. If your daughter is shy and needs a little more privacy to bring out her best, the private cenote might be the best option.
The public cenote is where most of our photoshoots take place and could be the most suitable for your daughter’s Underwater Sweet 16. It is a much bigger cenote than the first one. The vegetation all around is also very beautiful and consists of an outdoor part with direct sunlight and a cave with filtered sunlight. Also for this reason more poses are possible. Last but not least, it is much cheaper than the private cenote.
As you can see the underwater sweet 16 is not necessarily limited to underwater phots. The tropical vegetation lends itself perfectly to land shots as well and Sofia was magnificent in both situations.
Photoshoots on the beach or in more “urban” locations can of course be added to the cenote shooting. Isla Mujeres seems to us the most suitable place.
The images you see in this post are an excerpt of three different photoshoots taken on three different days in three different locations. On the first day, we worked in the (private) cenote, on the second day in Isla Mujeres, on the third in Cancun along the beach in front of the Iberostar hotel.
The Underwater Sweet 16 can be booked as a stand-alone photoshoot, but two more shootings in Isla Mujeres and/or Cancun can be arranged on other days.
We finish this post by thanking that little bunny named Sofia, Cuban by birth but living in Miami. Photographing her Underwater Sweet 16, together with her parents and sister, has been a funny, beautiful, and unforgettable experience.
This Underwater sweet 16 Cenote Underwater Photoshoot took place between Playa del Carmen and Tulum – Mexico.
